Mike Hart ran for 146 yards and No. 14 Michigan got off to a strong start with a 27-7 victory over Vanderbilt on Saturday.

The Wolverines scored on an impressive opening drive and had a chance to build an early cushion, but the Commodores blocked a kick and scored on a trick play to pull within three points early in the second quarter.

Michigan went ahead 20-7 late in the third on Chad Henne's 14-yard pass to a leaping Tyler Ecker.

The Wolverines sealed their eighth straight home opener by forcing quarterback Chris Nickson to fumble for a second time with 4:33 left near midfield, leading to Henne's 27-yard pass to Mario Manningham.

In his first start in place of Jay Cutler, who Denver drafted with 11th overall pick, Nickson was 11-of-25 for 99 yards and would?ve been sacked more than six times if he wasn?t so mobile. Standout receiver Earl Bennett had six catches for 58 yards and threw a 30-yard touchdown to Marlon White to make it 10-7 with 12:26 left in the first half.

Henne finished 10-of-22 for 135 yards with two TDs.

The Wolverines are coming off a 7-5 season, their worst since going .500 in 1984. They have their lowest preseason ranking since 1997, when they went on to win a national championship.

Cutler helped Vanderbilt win five games last season ? after the school had four straight two-win seasons.

The way the Wolverines started, it looked like it might be an easy afternoon.

Michigan drove 81 yards on the opening kickoff ? with a nice mix of the run and pass ? and scored on a 19-yard run when Kevin Grady went right and sliced across the defense with a cutback.

The Wolverines had to settle for a 10-0 lead on their third drive after a pass for a first down at the 1 was overturned by review.

Vanderbilt started to make the Wolverines sweat by blocking a field goal and fooling them on a trick play early in the second quarter. Nickson tossed a lateral to Bennett, who found a wide-open White for a 30-yard TD.

Garrett Rivas? career-long 48-yard field goal on the ensuing possession put Michigan ahead 13-7. The Wolverines had a chance to create a bigger cushion on their next drive, but Grady fumbled at Vanderbilt?s 19.[/b]

EAST LANSING -- Drew Stanton threw for 225 yards and a touchdown Saturday to lead Michigan State to a 27-17 win over Idaho and new coach Dennis Erickson.

The game was a reunion for Erickson and Michigan State coach John L. Smith, who coached together with three different programs -- including Idaho -- in the 1980s.

Smith's Spartans (1-0) survived against Erickson's Vandals (0-1) in the non-conference season opener, largely because of Stanton's mistake-free football. The senior quarterback completed 16 of 25 passes and rushed for 55 yards on eight carries.

Idaho, a member of Western Athletic Conference, cut Michigan State's lead to 24-17 with 9:51 remaining in the fourth quarter. Vandal quarterback Steven Wichman connected with receiver Lee Smith on a 13-yard touchdown pass, capping an 81-yard drive.

Michigan State responded by driving deep into Idaho territory. But the Vandals defense stopped Michigan State's Javon Ringer on fourth-and-1 at the Idaho 25.

That gave Idaho the ball with 5:40 remaining, but the Vandals couldn't generate any offense on their next possession.

Michigan State was nearly able to run out the clock on its final possession, capping a 75-yard drive with a 23-yard field goal by Brett Swenson.

Stanton completed passes to six different Spartans, including a 27-yard touchdown pass to Kerry Reed in the first quarter.

Jayson Bird led Idaho with 88 yards and a TD on 20 carries. Wichman completed 17 of 31 passes for 155 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Michigan State led 17-3 at halftime.

Erickson is in his second stint as Idaho's coach. He went 32-15 with the Vandals from 1982-85.

Smith served as Erickson's defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Idaho. They later coached together at Wyoming and Washington State, and they remain close friends.

When Erickson moved to Miami in 1989 -- on his way to winning two national championships in six years -- Smith returned to Idaho for his first head coaching job, compiling a 53-21 record in six seasons.

Erickson, who most recently coached the San Francisco 49ers in 2003 and 2004, was out of coaching last season. He returned to Idaho in February, replacing Nick Holt, now an assistant at Southern Cal.

Idaho was a successful Division I-AA program when Erickson and Smith first coached there. Now it's a struggling I-A program. The Vandals haven't had a winning season since 1999 and were 11-47 in the last five seasons, including a 2-9 mark last year.

They won't be able to stop Texas because they have no D. That's why Texas is going to pull it out because eventually you have to stop someone. And Texas will be able to do that.

MSU and UM should've won against their opponents the same way. MSU even struggled to in their game.

The Buckeyes have a ton of offensive firepower. It'll be a very entertaining slugfest. But I think the Buckeyes win.
