CHENEY, Wash. -- Seattle Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens was taken off the field on a cart Thursday after injuring his left knee during practice.
Coach Mike Holmgren said Stevens appeared to have his knee take the brunt of his weight after falling on it during a team drill. He walked off the field, but then was examined by trainers while sitting on the cart and then was taken back to the locker room.
Stevens was expected to have an MRI on Thursday afternoon.
"It looked like he got tripped up a little bit ... and he just kind of came down on his knee. That's what it looked like to me," Holmgren said. "We'll see it on film, but he just came down on it and the knee bore the weight of his body."
Stevens had surgery April 25 on the left knee.
Stevens emerged last season as a favorite target of quarterback Matt Hasselbeck on third downs and near the goal line. He had career highs of 45 receptions and five touchdowns.
But most remember him for his verbal sparring with Pittsburgh linebacker Joey Porter the week of the Super Bowl. He then struggled against the Steelers, dropping three passes during the Seahawks 21-10 loss.
Stevens was Seattle's first-round draft choice in 2002.
"It was the same knee he had surgery on, so we're a little apprehensive," Holmgren said.
Stevens didn't participate in training camp until Aug. 9, while recovering from the surgery. He was not expected to play in Sunday's preseason game at Indianapolis, but was on track to play Aug. 26 at San Diego.
"Having him back on the field was fun. It gives our offense a lot of speed at that position," Hasselbeck said.
Itula Mili will resume the No. 1 tight end spot on Seattle's offense. Mili missed much of last season after suffering an intestinal blockage just before the season opener. Behind Mili, Seattle has some experience with four-year veterans Will Heller and Matt Murphy.
"It's good to have him back," Holmgren said of Mili. "Now with Jerramy's situation it's good to have a veteran tight end in there."
Seattle has already struggled with injuries. Wide receiver Darrell Jackson and defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs have yet to practice in training camp. Projected starting guard Floyd "Pork Chop" Womack, wide receiver D.J. Hackett, center Robbie Tobeck and defensive tackle Russell Davis all have missed time with injuries during camp.
Just this week, the Seahawks got defensive ends Grant Wistrom and Joe Tafoya, and defensive tackle Rocky Bernard back from offseason surgeries.[/b]
