Knicks decline to match Spurs' offer to Butler

Web Posted: 07/19/2006 01:55 PM CDT

SALT LAKE CITY ? The New York Knicks have decided not to match the Spurs? three-year, $7 million offer to restricted free agent Jackie Butler, a Knicks? spokesman said Wednesday.

The Spurs have yet to officially hear from the Knicks or the NBA.

The Spurs also have not heard from the Denver Nuggets, who have until Thursday to match an offer for restricted free agent Francisco Elson.

Both Butler and Elson are centers.

Good move by the Spurs. Butler is only 20 years old and will definately help out their C troubles.

Butler can score. I think it's because he's pretty big so he just tosses himself around there. As big as he is, he needs to get in better shape and he's young so he has time. From what I've seen when he's played the Pistons, he's killed us everytime. Not that he's costed us games or anything, but he just gets his against us. It'll be interesting to see how he fits in with them. He's rather young for a possible starter on a contending team with that core they got there (Duncan, Ginobili, and Parker).

True, but they're desperate.

San Antonio Express-News - The Spurs received twice the good news on Thursday when the Denver Nuggets revealed they were not going to match the offer sheet signed by center Francisco Elson, allowing both Elson and ex-Knick big man Jackie Butler to officially join the Spurs organization.

The Spurs hope Elson and Butler, 21, can give them production at center at less than half the combined $12.5 million Nazr Mohammed (Detroit) and Rasho Nesterovic (Toronto) will make next season.

The third year of Butler's contract also is at the Spurs' option, so the team could conceivably have only Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili under contract after the 2007-08 season, allowing them significant salary-cap room to reshape the roster.

The Nuggets informed Elson's agent, Calvin Andrews, late Thursday afternoon they didn't plan to match the Spurs' offer unless an unexpected trade allowed the team to move another of its frontcourt players. When one didn't materialize, Denver simply allowed the 11:59 p.m. deadline to lapse.[/b]

Good pick up for the Spurs. Nesterovic isn't much of a presence inside but they need bigger bodies than Nazr to compete against the big guys in the paint.

While I like the Butler signing, spending over half of the MLE on Francisco Elson is a joke. No way on earth is he worth that.

They're replacements for Mohammad, Nesterovic. We'll c what they bring to the Spurs.

Francisco Elson will bring the defensive wild cards to the table with his shot-blocking ability that'll help Tim Duncan & his midrange J's not too bad for someone with that raw offensive ability. Jackie Butler will definitely be a great low-post scorer in the near future, but he's young & with a mentor like Tim Duncan who'll help him become a solid player just like David Robinson helping TD out, he'll have a promising NBA career in no time.

Butler is worth a shot, considering how young he is.
