Not a pay check (salary) for services per say, but a stipend or allowance for expenses.
My rationale for this is: These athletes are traveling a great deal on behalf of the university, are public relations vehicles for universities, etc., and probably do incur expenses that are somewhat higher than the norm. Many cannot participate in work study programs that are sponsored by the university. I recognize that the university is paying their tuition, board, fees, etc., but general life cost something that many of these players and families can ill afford. If the university was not able to have revenue driven athletics that are driven by these athletes, the university, the community where the university is located, and the rest of the university system would suffer financially.(Don't get me started on this; the cost of a college education is outrageous, has been for years, and is one area that should have had price controls years ago-and I am not a liberal or a socialist). So I would view the allowance as a work study program for the athlete. The university could decide to include cell phone costs, personal costs incurred on the road, or whatever. The university could determine the type of costs for which money could be spent. The full argument that the payoff is a pro contract is a slight chance for most and actually the argument that can perpetuate fraud, abuse, and athletes leaving early WHICH BY THE WAY SHOULD BE A THREAD DISCUSSION OF ITS OWN! |

I just don't like how much money is made off of these "students". I remember 5 years ago and sitting in class final waiting for the exam to begin at Purdue University. Here walks in -unnamed- basketball stud and he sits down in front of me. I didn't know he was in my class!!! Never saw him before, so I asked him how he thought he would do on the final, he simpy laughed and said system has me! How about sharing the wealth with them, but not until the graduate. Maybe then you wouldn't see so many get out of college with no education.

No, they shouldn't.
Many of the players worth paying never even go onto the NBA (Drew Neitzel). Plus, it's college. They have to pay to go to college, so the schools would basically be returning their money. Last edited by Godofrock72 : 02-17-2009 at 07:36 PM. Reason: Fixing some errors with spelling & punctuation. |
