NEW YORK ? Now that he is satisfied with the NBA's out-of-uniform attire, Commissioner David Stern's objective is to unify on-court player appearance.
"This is not our favorite subject ... being a detention monitor," Stern said, adding that uniformity has become a thing of the past. So Stern said he took a page from the NFL, which checks uniform conformity.

"I have been admiring from afar the NFL's intense attention to the detail of their players' adherence to the rules with respect to dress," he said. "I actually thought we could be a little more forgiving, a little bit less insistent on precise adherence.

"Really just do it the NBA way, which is current, not taking ourselves too seriously and get to the same place.

"I was wrong."

Stern said the lack of rules has resulted in "stockings" and "wristbands become an arm sleeve."

Kobe Bryant, one of the first players to wear tights for a leg injury, is also one of many who wear wristbands as arm bands. But Stern said he wasn't singling any player.

"It's not about the particular player. Who should care if one player does something that is a little bit different or quirky?" he said. "But then when you have 20 players do it, the uniform is no longer uniform. One uniform has an arm, another one has a leg and a third one has a bunch of bulging shirts out from under it."

Some rule changes and Stern's thoughts on them:

?Players must remove warm-ups on the bench, not snap them off at the scorer's table. Jerseys have to be tucked in before players enter the game.

"We're trying to (speed up) the game. ... Don't go into the game three times, once when you get up, once when go to the stoop and once when you go into the game finally."

?Players can wear one 4-inch wristband on each wrist. They cannot be worn on the bicep and headbands can be no wider than 2 inches.

"All of sudden they go from 2 inches to 7 inches. They have commercial messages, and then they're on the elbow, then they go all the way up, and then they're disconnected, in bright psychedelic colors. What is going on here?"

?Players can no longer sport tights or long compression socks.

"Because there are no rules, all of a sudden you get tight manufacturers looking for endorsements, so guys suddenly put on tights whether they are there for a good reason or not."

?Players will be called for technicals for excessive complaining.

"It's about the game. It's not about a negotiation between a player and a referee. This is for every fan who has called out, 'Get back on defense, stop arguing the call.' The referee is not going to change it."

All-Star Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves said the new rules "were almost like communism" and Detroit Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace, who led the league with 16 technical fouls last season, said the quicker technicals should be called the " 'Sheed Wallace rule."

But Stern, aware the NFL is often called the No Fun League, isn't concerned that the rules will squelch fun or individuality.

"Our fun comes from the extraordinary ability of our players in full display without helmets and long pants, long sleeves and hats," he said. "And anything that focuses everyone on that is nothing but fun in the NBF ? the Nothing But Fun league."

[/b]

I don't even want to comment on it anymore, it's getting really old and really annoying how this league is trying to control every single thing in this damn league. And wtf is the Players Association on this, I know all of the players don't agree with all these damn rules and the PA needs to step in and say something. Next players are going to be fined because their shoe laces are too long or they're not chewing the gum properly. Or maybe the next step will be making every player cut their hair and eliminating the braids and fros taking more "black" out of the NBA.

FIRE STERN!

But wtf whats wrong with guys for example Ben having headbands on his bicep? All these rules are fucking stupid, they're going to start measuring headbands now and giving out fines because your headband was too long, what is this elementary?

This subject was on the table. The Players Association sold out for better contract rules.

Overhanded response to Stephen Jackson. Kowtowing to his new consumer base, which ironically, is completely against gun control for everybody else.
