Default Very Basic Rules Question

Sorry to post here, but I don't understand the rules of which basket each team should be heading for. I looked online but couldn't find a clear explanation.

As far as I can tell, if a team gains possession of the ball on the other team's half of the court (where the other team is actively trying to get a basket), they have to go for the opposite basket.

What if the defending team throws the ball out of bounds on the enemy's half of the court? What if the defending team gets the ball, takes it to the other side of the court, and throws it out of bounds? Does the target basket change in either case?

In other words, what causes the baskets/courts to switch, instead of Team A always going for Basket A and Team B always going for Basket B?

Thanks. Sorry for the newbie question.

The only thing that determains which basket a team shoots at is halftime.

So in the first half Team A shoots at Basket A, then in the second half they shoot at basket B.

It has nothing to do with anything else. Hope this clears things up for you.

Really?
I should've clarified- I meant in casual pick-up play, not in the NBA. Are there any unofficial rules that involve switching baskets? I was just confused when trying to play (I was playing with people who were speaking another language so I couldn't ask).
Thanks.

ok well I assumed you meant the NBA.

In casual play the rules can vary between the people playing. Even the out of bounds line doesnt mean the ball is out if that is stated before hand. Make it take it, or losers ball, who calls the fouls, if there are 1 pointers and 2's, everything and every rule in a pickup game can be changed.

As far as your question is concerned there very well could be an UNIFFICIAL rule with the guys that you were playing with. Either switch baskets after every 5 points, or half way or whatever the case may be.

Useally when I play we dont worry about switching baskets UNLESS 1 basket seems to have an advantage over the other.

Without being there it is hard to say what happened.
