Both are very nice to have. Take a look at Michael Redd, Kobe and Ray Allen for example. The US worship of athleticism has become a problem at the expense of team play. It killed me in the last olympics when a spectacular US dunk was offset by three passes and a three pointer at the other end.

i guess it all depends on the position you need to fill.
tall forward, i rekon you take athletcism and the same goes for a centre. small guard you want good shooting. game IQ is something that alot of young players may not have due to inexperience. if a young player has IQ ahead of his time then he has a jump start on alot of the players his age. its an excelent quailty. when you have all of those things in one thats when you get kobe, james and jordan etc. |

I'd go with athletic guys.
you can always teach athletic guys how to shoot case in point: MJ, LeBron etc But you can never force a shooter to be athletic case in point: Bird, Bobby Hurley etc

In an organized basketball setting it would have to be shooting. You can have an athletic guy catch a dunk on every single play, but then on the other end have the shooter score from the 3-point arc and the shooter wins. Shooters usually have the IQ to get open for a shot and are great in clutch situations.
Athletic guys are great if you want to put excitement in a game, but hitting a bunch of jumpers is just as much fun to watch as dunking. Remember the days of the Suns/Mavericks rivalry where they would score over 100 points just from shooting? That was exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
