Power forward Nene made two big commitments over the weekend.

On Saturday, he got married in Rio de Janeiro. On Sunday, he agreed to a six-year, $60 million deal to stay with the Denver Nuggets.

His agent, Dan Fegan, interrupted Nene's honeymoon in his native Brazil with the good news.

"Ecstatic couldn't be too strong a word," Fegan said Sunday night from Los Angeles.

Combined with the five-year, $80 million extension that Carmelo Anthony agreed to Saturday, Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke spent the first weekend of free agency committing some $140 million toward building what he hopes will be a championship contender in the very near future.

"If ever there was any doubt about Mr. Kroenke's desire to bring a championship to Denver, this weekend's events put that to rest forever," Fegan said.

The contracts, which can be signed July 12, also will nudge the Nuggets into luxury tax territory.

Nene, who has career averages of 10.7 points and 6.2 rebounds, played just three minutes last season before blowing out his right knee on opening night. He is still recovering from surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and isn't expected to return to full-court activity for another two months

OVERPAID OR NOT?

Extremely overpaid. I would have though Nene's market value was $5 million a year.

Then again, Dampier, Blount, Jerome James all got massive deals. Why not Nene?

The rise of stupid GMs continue.

Yea, but Nene is better then all of those players and have a ton more potential. I dont think a single team would have paid that much more then the MLE though so I don't see why they offered so much so quickly. Nobody was gonna come close to that number, why not wait it out and see what happens?

I think Nene develops into a fine player, but that's a hell of a lot of money.

Rocky Mountain News - Nene agreed to a six-year, $60 million contract on July 2nd, but as both sides attempt to finalize the paperwork, the deal remained unofficial Tuesday.

Mark Warkentien, Nuggets director of player personnel, said the gap between Nene's oral agreement and a final deal should not be viewed as problematic.

"It's all dandy," Warkentien said. "When you put enough attorneys in a room, things go slow." [/b]

Wow, that is a huge contract considering what he's accomplished so far in his career. Even if he somehow manages to stay healthy he'll have a hard time living up to that type of money. At least he's young....
