Ok, I'm going to try and explain the best I can what this is. A lot of the people on this messageboard used to post on a different messageboard that was similar to this awhile back. One day I had this awesome idea (I have alot of them). It was to make a fun forum game that was similar to fantasy sports. I came up with Team Creation Vote-Off champonships, and it was pretty successful and we had alot of fun doing them. We ended up doing a few sports, football, baseball, and basketball (if I remember correctly). For Hoopstalk's first we will do basketball, because it's the easiest to do and it will show everyone how it is done for future tourneys. Without further ado, this is how you play:
First thing is the number of teams in the tournament will be decided. It's a tournament format, so it has to be a format of 4, 8, 16 teams, ect. People sign up to play in the tourney and pick their team names and what not. After every team spot is filled, a random draft order will be decided (I think I pulled names out of a baseball cap for this). After the order is decided, teams will draft players, in a snake order (last pick in the 1st round has first pick in the 2nd round, and so on), and form the best starting line-up they can. There are no bench players or backups in this game, so a strategy to form the best starting line-up possible is recommended. In basketball for example, there will only be 5 rounds of drafting, just enough for everyone to create a lineup.
After drafting is completed, the tourney begins. The match-up seeds are determined by the drafting order (example: In an 8 team league, the team with the 1st pick will play the team with the 8th pick). The match-ups are then posted in a poll thread. Both teams starting line-ups will be listed in the thread, and then the poll is the most important part of the game. People will vote on which team they think would win. The team with the most votes at the poll deadline (will typically be 72 hours) will advance to the next round. The tourney continus until a champ is crowned.
It's a pretty fun thing to do, and encourages alot of forum activity. It really caught on at the other website, and with this one being even more active, I assume it will be a hit. For our first one, as mentioned above, we will do basketball, and run just a 4 team tourney so everyone can see how it works. I would encourage all members who are interested in this to stay active in the voting so we can make these games fun for everyone in every tourney. Even if you're not a contendor in the current tourney, get in on the next one and stay active in voting so people will do the same for you. After this initial one, we will do many in the future, of all different sports. If everyone enjoys this, hopefully we can make this one of the best aspects of Hoopstalk.net!
